Tipping Services! Optional or Obligation!

Tipping is something on which everyone has their own opinion. It is an option that after having a good meal you are expected to leave a good amount as a tip. But at few places it has become an obligation and people ask you to tip them. I have yelled at few people and find it very unreasonable to pay them extra, something for which they are already get paid. Here, I am sharing few occurrences to make sure I am not behaving like a cynical customer and over reacting to this matter.

Last time when I got a nice hair cut I stopped for few seconds and asked myself—Do I need to pay more or not? Is it something for which they get paid or I should tip them because I have been entertained well. Even I don’t reach to a tipping service amount which I could call appropriate.
I have asked people about the right tipping amount. They said 10 per cent is okay while 20 per cent is considered standard. And from my personal experiences, I have learned paying 15 per cent is descent. Even few times I faced a dilemma how much to pay and at few occasions I find tipping nothing is okay for exceptionally poor services.

Being a foodie, I love visiting restaurants and exploring new places to eat out in Delhi/Gurgaon. At few places, I found lack in services—like slow to get menu cards, waiter forgot to bring my drink but very prompt in adding the not ordered food to my bill. And 12.5 per cent service charge on the top of my bill is very normal, no matter the quality of services. And if I pay cash (which is rare in my case) the waiters are already convinced that the change coming with my returning amount belongs to them.
I was shocked to see that people arrived after us had received their order while I was sitting and waiting for my order. And this made me realize offering an initial tip can get you better services.

Tip has a different story too and you probably would not understand when tip has turned into bribe. Lately, when I tipped a lawyer at the court who married us, I felt few people were staring at me and the tip was turned into bribe.

So, I am compelled to ask if I am observing the situation differently which is not going my way or is it something normal to everyone.

  1. Very subjective.I live in Jackson hights New york. where we don't have to fight with quality of food or service but tax which is 9% on restro (depends on which area of new york you go) and tip we have to pay 20% of check.Means if you got $100 charged you have to pay $9 tax+$ 20 tip.
But only if you are getting ala carte, if gone out for buffet or to go we don't need to.

  2. Yes..I think it varies from one place to another. Tax also differs and does the quality of food and services. I believe, tip should depend on the service offered. I don't mind paying 20 per cent as well as no tip at all.

  3. I truly beliv in service. As soon as we stepped out of home we have to take money out from our pocket. For product , Yes ready to pay. But for services we are not obligated. I think tip depends on staff, hygiene, staff dress code , sanitary and many more things.
